This time, I discuss an application of SAXS application in the field of metallurgy. <!--more-->To be honest, before I started at NIMS, I was not familiar with the use of SAXS in to study metals and alloys. However, thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/researchers.general.hokudai.ac.jp\/profile\/en.hWX3ZtmGJq81eDe6iLTv6w==.html\">Masato Ohnuma<\/a> (my mentor at the time) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Julian_Rosalie\">Julian Rosalie<\/a> (an excellent microscopist in metallurgy whom I interviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mu0I4oWgmMs\">for this video<\/a>), I have been quickly brought up to speed with the finer details of the effect of nanostructures in metals.<\/p>\n<p>To my surprise, it turned out metals were not the static materials I was expecting. Indeed, small nanostructures can grow in the metals at moderate temperatures (&lt;200\u02daC, see <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.actamat.2013.11.029\">f.ex. this paper<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1210.5366\">also on arXiv<\/a>)), and we also have evidence for such &#8220;ageing&#8221; behaviour in room-temperature alloys (see <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1407.6146\">our most recent addition to arXiv<\/a>). As you would expect, this structure can very much affect the mechanical properties of the material.<\/p>\n<p>So in today&#8217;s video, I show a very short summary of the work for the study of ageing at moderate temperatures of MgZn alloys.
